Procedure: 3101

Title: Academic Standards of Progress

Based on Policy: 3.10 - Academic Progress

Office of Primary Responsibility: Vice President for Educational and Student Services

  1. Purpose:

To establish a system of academic probation and suspension to ensure that students maintain a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0

  1. Procedure:
    1. Academic probation 1 (AP1)
      1. If a student’s cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 after 7 or more semester hours, the student will be placed on AP1.
      2. Students on AP1 will be restricted to enrolling in not more than 13 semester hours and must have their program of study approved by an advisor or counselor prior to their next registration.
      3. Students will remain on AP1 status until their cumulative GPA rises above 2.0 or until moved to academic probation 2 status.
    2. Academic probation 2 (AP2)
      1. Students who have been placed on AP1 will be placed on AP2 if their GPA for any subsequent term falls below 2.0.
      2. Students on AP2 will be required to attend individual counseling/advising sessions, be limited to not more than a 13 semester hour class load, and be restricted to a prescribed program that may include courses to overcome skills deficiencies.
      3. Students will remain on AP2 status each term that their cumulative GPA remains below 2.0 unless they are moved to academic suspension status.
    3. Academic suspension (AS)
      1. Students will be placed on AS if their GPA for any two consecutive terms falls below 2.0.
      2. The period of AS is one term.
      3. Students may request that the Academic Appeals Committee review their case.
      4. While on AS, students may audit two non-preparatory courses while receiving assistance in the Tutoring and Learning Center.
      5. Students on AS may not attend college credit classes for the term (a term is defined as the fall term, spring term, or summer terms.) unless approved by review under the criteria described in the procedure:  Removal of Academic Suspension/Probation.
    4. Removal of academic probation/suspension status
      1. Students may be removed from AP1 status by attaining a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better during the current term.
      2. Students may be upgraded from AP2 to AP1 by achieving a term GPA of 2.0 or better.
      3. If students are readmitted after AS, they will enter on AP2 unless their cumulative GPA is 2.0 or better.
    1. Determination of satisfactory progress

Determination of satisfactory progress will be measured at the end of each term.
