STEM Quest

South Florida State College invites first through tenth-grade students on a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) adventure to explore the worlds of engineering, cells, and animal dissections in three science-packed learning sessions on Saturday, Dec. 6, 9 a.m. – noon, at SFSC’s Health and Science Education Center, Highlands Campus.

STEM Quest expeditions are guided by SFSC science educators who take students on a journey of discovery in the college’s state-of-the-art laboratories. Through fun activities and problem-solving challenges, students learn how the ever-advancing fields of science and math are constantly changing the world around them. Students may even gain insight into careers they never knew existed.

STEM Quest Sessions

Saturday, Dec. 6

  • Catch Me If You Can (Grades 1 - 3)

    Session by Leslie Comeaux

Students will participate in an engineering project creating a trap for that pesky gingerbread man. The story will be shared followed by brainstorming and a hands-on design and construction challenge.

  • Cell Structure (Grades 4 and 5)

    Session by Tara Hornick

All living organisms are made of cells. Plants, animals and even you are one big collection of cells. Get to know your cells and the functions of their organelles. Through this exploration, you will discover that cells are amazing!

  • Dissection Reveals the Connection (Grades 6 - 10)

    Session by Dr. William Gregory

Students will collaborate in small groups to study the physiological systems and functions of a mammal through the dissection of a fetal pig. The organization of the major bodily systems including digestive, circulatory, respiratory, muscular, and reproduction will be explored.
