Description of Program:

This program provides coherent and rigorous content aligned with educational standards and technical knowledge and skills needed to prepare for further education and careers in the Health Sciences. It provides technical skill proficiency, and includes competency-based applied learning that contributes to the academic knowledge, and problem-solving skills, work attitudes, general employability skills, technical skills, and occupation-specific skills, and knowledge of all aspects of the Health Science career cluster.

Laboratory activities are an integral part of this program. These activities include instruction in the use of safety procedures, tools, equipment, materials, and processes related to this occupation. You will perform nursing assistant skills in the clinical and/or simulated laboratory settings under the supervision of a qualified registered nurse instructor.

Successful completion of this program from an approved school prepares you for certification for employment as a Nursing Assistant in a nursing home in accordance with 464.203, Florida Statutes. If you satisfactorily complete this approved program, you are eligible to apply to take the National Nursing Assistant examination being utilized in Florida, in accordance with 464.203, F.S.

This program meets the Department of Health HIV/AIDS, Domestic Violence, and Prevention of Medical Errors education requirements.

Program Requirements:

The Florida Board of Nursing is responsible for protecting the public. In carrying out this responsibility, the Board of Nursing reserves the right to deny licensure to anyone who has been convicted of a crime other than minor traffic violations. Pursuant to Section 456.0635, Florida Statutes, the Florida Board of Nursing shall refuse to issue a license, certification or registration and shall refuse to admit a candidate for examination if the applicant has been:

  • Convicted or plead guilty or nolo contender (no Contest) to a felony violation regardless of adjudication of chapters 409, 817 or 893, Florida Statutes; or 21 U.S.C. ss. 801-970 or 42 U.S.S. ss 1395-1396, unless the sentence and any probation or pleas ended more than 15 years prior to the application.
  • Terminated for cause from Florida Medicaid Program (unless the applicant has been in good standing for the most recent five years).
  • Terminated for cause by any other State Medicaid Program or the Medicare Program (unless the termination was at least 20 years prior to the date of the application and the applicant has been in good standing with the program for the most recent five years).

Upon notification of admission, you are required to complete the following prior to the start of the program course:

  • Physical health exam and a record of immunizations from a licensed physician or nurse practitioner (form to be provided upon notification of admission).
  • Florida Department of Law Enforcement fingerprinting to be scheduled before classes begin.
  • Drug screen, information provided upon notification of admission.

NOTE: Failure to complete these requirements will result in loss of eligibility for admission to the program.

General Information

  • SFSC reserves the right to deny admission if any requirements for the Nursing Assistant Program are not successfully completed.
  • The college adheres to federal and state laws controlling equal access/equal opportunity.
  • If you have excessive absences, you will be dropped from the program (excessive absences are defined as being absent from 10 percent or more scheduled class contact hours with a grade average less than 75 percent, or being absent from 15 percent or more scheduled class contact hours regardless of the grade).
  • If you have life or health conditions that might hinder attendance, you may wish to consider another program or delay application until a strong commitment to attendance can be made.
  • An official criminal history background check is required for entry into the Nursing Assistant Program. Please be aware that some providers of clinical experience will not allow individuals with certain types of criminal history into their facilities. This may be cause for denial into the program, because such individuals would not be able to successfully complete clinical portions of the Nursing Assistant Program.
  • You are expected to be punctual in attending every lecture, laboratory, clinical session, and off campus rotation. If you have excessive absences, you will be dropped from the program.
  • You must maintain a 75 percent in the Nursing Assistant course. Less than 75 percent will result in being dropped from the program.

Special Requirements: (1) Successfully pass CPR prior to class (American Heart Association – Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers), (2) Score Reading - 11, Mathematics - 10, and Language - 11 on TABE prior to registration.
